Exploring Paid Leave Policy in Ohio
Paid leave isn’t just a policy, it’s a lifeline for workers and families. Throughout their lives, most people will experience at least two moments where they need to step away from work to care for themselves or a loved one. Yet, 77% of Ohio workers have no access to paid leave, forcing them to choose between their health, their families, or financial security.
On September 12th, The Women’s Fund partnered with Collaborate Cleveland and the Women’s Fund of Central Ohio to co-host the Ohio Paid Leave Policy Institute. This event brought together advocates and stakeholders from across the state to learn from national experts, discuss the impact of paid leave policies, and outline the next steps for advancing paid leave in Ohio. We left the day more informed, energized, and united in our commitment to push for meaningful change.
Here are just a few advantages of state-level paid family and medical leave policies:
- Improved health outcomes for mothers and babies, including a 12% reduction in post neonatal infant mortality.
- A 2% reduction in poverty and food insecurity rates, with an 18% increase in the likelihood of mothers working one year after birth.
- Helps small businesses offer this essential support, leveling the playing field to compete for top talent.
As The Women’s Fund deepens its focus on this issue, it’s clear how crucial paid leave is to the economic stability and growth of women and families. We are committed to moving forward.
